Traces of Âşık – Âşığın İzleri
Ulaş Özdemir’s last solo album “Traces of Âşık – Âşığın İzleri” which released in France contains Anatolian âşık[troubadour] poetry from 19th century to today which are all composed by himself. Özdemir follows the footsteps of the âşıks with their poetry and his music to express today’s life and problems like old âşıks. His compositions are inspired by traditional folk music from Anatolia and specially Alevi music, which are the main musical sources of the âşık music in Turkey, but theyhave the energy of Istanbul -the city that Özdemir livesmore than 20 years- as well. Özdemir plays various bağlama sounds such as dede sazı, cura and divan. Heplays and sings all the songs.
Özdemir’s music is mainly based on Anatolian Alevi-Bektashi music and traditional folk music of âşıkrepertoire but he has energy of today’s various music styles like folk, reggae etc. He plays various bağlamafamily intruments virtuosly and sings deeply to express ancient Anatolian vibration in today’s life.
Ulaş Özdemir, musician, composer, ethnomusicologist. He was born in Maraş (Turkey) and lives in Istanbul. Heearned Phd degree on ethnomusicology in Istanbul. He has participated in a variety of concerts and lectures in Turkey and abroad, performing on the traditional instruments of Alevi-Bektasi music, dede sazı, bağlamaand vocal. He has performed and recorded albums with many world music artists such as Ali Akbar Moradi, Kayhan Kalhor, Azam Ali, Niyaz, and his latest group Forabandit with Sam Karpienia and Bijan Chemirani. He recorded several solo albums, compilations and soundtracks. He worked at well known Turkish label Kalan Muzik as production director between 1997-2010.Currently, he is staff member of Istanbul University, State University, Musicology Department.
